REGULAR EPHESUS TOURS FROM KUSADASI OR SELCUK TOWN
At least a day is needed for Ephesus (Efes), as the ruins are extensive and widely scattered. During the summer thousands of visitors come from Izmir, from the nearby holiday resorts and from the cruise ships which dock at Kusadasi. They congregoate in the popular areas and restricting access. If you wish to see the ancient city with the maximum comfort and minimum effort, go to Ephesus in the early morning. The site is open daily 08.00-18.30, 17.30 in winter: admission charge. You may enter by the modern gate near the Church of Councils or by the ancient Magnesian Gate and walk downhill. Tickets are sold at both places. In summer the temperature at Ephesus can be uncomfortably high and, apart from the area near the theatre, there is little shade. There is a restaurant at the northern entrance near the Gymnasium of Vedius. During the holiday season this is usually very crowded. Bring a picnic lunch (If you travel on your own). Alfresco meals are not forbidden providing they do not impede other visitors and leave no litter. Near the restaurant there are kiosks and boutiques selling souvenirs and bric-à-brac. You may be approached by touts offering ‘ancient coins’ and other ‘antiquities’. These are almost certainly modern fakes of little or no value. If they are genuine, the vendor and the purchaser are breaking Turkish law and both could incur very severe penalties.
